TB-500 is a synthetic variant of the naturally occurring peptide Thymosin Beta 4 (TB-500), which is found in almost all human and animal cells. As a first-in-class drug candidate, it facilitates the following processes:

   - Differentiation of endothelial (blood vessel) cells
   - Angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels from existing ones) within dermal tissues
   - Migration of keratinocytes
   - Deposition of collagen; and
   - Reduction of inflammation.

One of the primary mechanisms by which TB-500 operates is through its regulation of Actin, a crucial protein for cell structure and movement. Among the many proteins found within cells, actin constitutes up to 10% of the total protein content, thus significantly influencing the cell's genetic framework.

This powerful peptide belongs to a widespread family of 16 related molecules, which are highly conserved in terms of sequence and presence across various tissues and circulating cells in the body. TB-500 not only associates with actin but also inhibits actin polymerization, functioning as the actin-sequestering molecule within eukaryotic cells.

TB-500 was discovered as a gene that is up-regulated four to six times during the early stages of blood vessel formation and has been shown to stimulate the creation of new blood cells from pre-existing vessels. This peptide is present in wound fluid, and when administered subcutaneously, it enhances wound healing, muscle development, and speeds up the recovery time of muscle fibers and their cells.

Another significant aspect of TB-500 is its promotion of cell migration through a specific interaction with actin in the cell cytoskeleton. Research has demonstrated that a central small amino acid long-actin binding domain exhibits characteristics associated with both blood cell proliferation and wound healing. These effects are realized through the acceleration of the migration of endothelial cells and keratinocytes, along with an increase in the production of enzymes that break down the extracellular matrix.

Studies confirm that TB-500 is a powerful, naturally occurring factor for wound repair with anti-inflammatory effects. Unlike other repair agents such as growth factors, TB-500 promotes both endothelial and keratinocyte migration. Additionally, it does not bind to the extracellular matrix and possesses a very low molecular weight, allowing it to traverse considerable distances through tissues.
